The song I've chosen to share with you is called “Pretty Girls”. It's about an old man in his final moments, saying farewell to all the pretty ladies who never gave him a fair shake, never gave him the time of day, and now will never get the chance. It's specific and yet universal, upbeat and yet bittersweet.

Where is home and what is the scene like?
I've lived in Los Angeles my entire life. There's no single “scene” but there are several sects and cliques which vary in terms of artistic integrity. While most bands and artists are either too cool for school or too school for cool, they're all artists and care about their community and their city. There's a lot of comaraderie, hugs are frequent, and people often seem to be more interested in inquiring about what you're up to than just using you to plug their project. The variety of music and venues can seem overwhelming and oversaturated, and the glass ceiling can seem so high and so thick, but the moments of triumph are always worth it and the hard work always pays off in Los Angeles. If you're kind and honest, with a little bit of talent you're sure to get somewhere.
How has living life influenced your music?
It's a hard question to answer, because I often think that my memories of life experiences reside in the subconscious, and will manifest and express themselves organically while I'm writing a song. I seem to gravitate towards themes like impermanence, desire, the cycle of attachment/detachment, and the passing of time. I pretty much never sit down to write a song about a specific moment or experience, my process generally begins with the chords and the melody emerging from somewhere outside of myself, and then the words are designed to fit rhythmically. As far as what the song specifically is about varies widely but the broad themes are pretty consistent.
Favorite movie?
I'm a huge movie buff, but if I had to choose one I'd probably have to go with There Will Be Blood. Every aspect of it is executed to excellently and with such brilliance, from a filmmaking perspective and in terms of sheer entertainment. Daniel Plainview, the main character played by Daniel Day Lewis, is a man who is so obsessed with his work that it has driven him totally insane. He tells many lies and yet punishes liars mercilessly. It is hard to see any good in him, just as he says in the film that he struggles to see any good in anyone he meets. I identify with him in the sense that his commitment to his craft has consumed him. I'm no Daniel Plainview, but I have, countless times, not accepted invitations to do fun things with fun people because I felt the need to focus on music.
