From the artist:
“Damaged” is about the pain of childhood trauma. No matter how far you come, or how successful you are, your history stays with you.
While it becomes easier to move past traumatic moments, forgiving those involved and yourself, as you grow, every time you meet someone you want to be close to, the question is always, WILL THEY ACCEPT ME, if they know my secret truths? The song talks about meeting a man of light. Jesus was such a man….but we know he is always accepting…so with his love, we never have to worry about rejection….but what about a mortal man? Will a man ever love a damaged woman?
And what about the scars? Will hearing about all that damage hurt a good person who has never experienced it, tainting their world with secret poisons too?
Not everyone is accepting. And not every good person wants to hear about trauma and abuse.
Do I risk poisoning someone I love with the stories of a dark and hurtful past…. or as the song suggests, walk away….. and let a good man, just carry on, unscathed?
If I love you, completely, will I be strong enough to walk away? Or will I take the fall… and let go of love…
BECAUSE I love you, I won’t let you my upside-down thinking poison you, my beautiful madness, my pain. Love changes everything, but can it accept and love even the damaged?
