Artist Name: Seyu

Tell us something about you that fans should know:

I write, produce, sing, rap, compose, record, perform and mix and master all my music on my own. I also create, shoot, edit and direct my own videos. I'm an artist inspired by the world. I listen to everything, no matter the language, genre, or era, if I'm listening to music. I don't study other artist or practice the art of imitation. I like to reimagine sounds, so my music may sound foreign or slightly familiar, but you can't point me to another artist and say we are the same. My earlier comparisons were Bjork just because I couldn't be classified, or Erykah Badu and India Arie because I wrap my hair (which is silly), and I love all those artist but I don't do what they do. I have eclectic taste, but I have street stories and queer love songs. Call that genre Seyu.

Where are you from and what’s the music scene like there?

I'm from Dayton, Ohio. I grew up in the forgotten hoods during the crack epidemic . Where dealers were gettin' rich but now there must be a drought because the younger generation is wild'n and looking for an excuse to use a gun. There isn't much of a music community, (that I know of) since Funk daze, but I wasn't living then. Now a few artist are in their separate corners releasing music videos and traveling to do shows. The dudes from my hoods are reporting their experience in crime zones and their wants for success through trap music and hoping the world (through youtube) is listening. You could probably catch a punk band from surrounding suburbs, or a folk band passing through from Cincinnati. The streets are heavily segregated. I realized I was unwelcome in neighborhoods close to home, but I guess white folks get to live in alternate realities, where somehow they get to think most Black folks are extinct. I used to play all types of music, bar hopping but no one was listening or could hear me over loud drunken chatter, bartenders slamming cabinets, and yelling food orders. I left as soon as I could. I moved the Los Angeles. Shout out to MadRatch and Jasiah. Jasiah made it out and MadRatch on his way.
