Interview: RYN Star
“RYN Star, I'm just a 14-year-old hustling young artist trying to make it into the industry from Virginia. What separates me from other artists is that I don't believe in being talented or being destined to make it, I believe in pure work and willpower. I'm willing to do what it takes to make it to the top, no matter what happens I'ma keep pushing. I also by an academic standard pretty smart, which is not something that's common for a young up-and-coming rapper, I always tried to succeed in school for my parent's sake, but what I was doing after that did not fit my persona at all. At home, I was never the problem child and was seen as good by my parents, but late at night or when I'm with certain friends is when I was wilding. I don't really associate with a lot of people who go to my school, since the people I hang out with are actually from a sort of a different place a bit away. In school, I'm seen as this smart and intelligent kid, but after that, I'm doing certain things that do not fit at all. This causes me to be stuck in two different worlds, one for my parents as the kids whose education is going to make it big time, and one for my friends as the boy who was always up to something. Music is my break away from all of that, me making my songs lets me truly find myself.”
Where are you from and what is the music scene like?
I'm from Virginia and where I'm from there's not a lot of big artists to look up to, so there's not really one particular sound there. Everyone really just listens to mainstream artists and that's their inspiration. But me, on the other hand, I also tune in to some of the more underground artists like Sofaygo, Melvoni, YSN Flow, and many other rappers. In the streets where I hang out, there are a lot of young hustlers playing their music on speakers, but with them not having the savage beast mentality you need to keep pushing on no matter what, I see a lot of them fall off or quit real quick. My school is even worse (from a music standpoint). Since the places I hang out are a bit away from where I live, what I experience is totally different from most of the students in my school. To me, their music is completely unauthentic causing me to dislike it right away. They've never seen or even understand half the things that they rap about causing their music to be pretty bad. The only person that I know from Virginia who has a bit of buzz is Bishszn.
What is your greatest source of inspiration?
Lots of New York artists and melodic rappers in the undergound realm of music such as Sofaygo, Pastoflacco, Melvoni and Lil Tjay and many more
How have your life experiences influenced your music?
Like I said I'm from Virginia. Me and my parents, we moved there when I was real young, the place we lived in before was a really poor and bad environment for any sort of success. My parents wanted to "try" and get me to a better place, but me being stuck in my ways always seemed to get into something. At school, I was always trying to be one of the top or at least someone up there to make up for the things I was doing later on in the day. At a young age, I was always hustling and doing what it takes to get some money and make a name for myself. I was always around music when I think about it, my homies were playing it and I was just hearing it every day, so after losing my uncle and my best friend one day I decided that I was gonna see what it's about. I started rapping and made a little track and it blew everyone away, they steadily tracked my progress and within a month I was already better than these people going at it for a couple of years. They were telling me things like bro you gotta do this you got some talent, but I wasn't buying into that and knew that I had to work to get where I wanted to be at. As for my topics of rapping a lot of it comes from stuff I've seen growing up or experienced, my lingo translates from people on the block, generic rap, and my time up at New York. My parents and I would occasionally go to New York to visit family. There I met a lot of people doing a lot of different things. You got dope dealers, music producers, artists, mixers everything. I was also picking up some of the lingo on their blocks. Overall the biggest things that influence my music from my life would definitely be just the overall music I heard and the things that we were doing after all my normal day stuff was done.
