Jason Derulo Leads Top Pop Songs Chart for A Milestone
Jason Derulo is no stranger to charting well when he releases music. However, it is most noteworthy that he is the first solo act to lead the Top Pop Songs chart across the span of the last 3 decades. With his latest release, “Savage Love” with Jawsh 685, Derulo has finally rose to the peak. With this achievement, Jason can now boast having led the chart in 2009 (00’s), in 2010, 2014, and 2015 with “In My Head”, “Talk Dirty”, and “Want to Want Me”, respectively. Especially relevant, and now with “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” in October 2020. Quite a feat. However, the first act to accomplish this was Maroon 5 when their song “Memories” topped the chart in February. Additionally, the song was released via Columbia Records and gives New Zealand born Jawsh 685 his first number one.
While the music video has been out now for a couple of months, the song has benefited majorly from going viral on TikTok. Because of its success on the platform, the song has found its way to playlists, radio, and music video streams. Furthermore, this cements another reason why TikTok is so valuable to musicians. Originally, the song was created off of the viral instrumental by Jawsh 685. Jason Derulo recorded the song and released it without clearing it with the New Zealand SoundCloud producer. However, this doesn’t seem to be an issue now as the two climb the charts together. There have been two music videos released for the song. One is a studio music video released in June of Jason recording the song and performing it. The other video is considered the official video but it the TikTok edition. This video features Jason singing and dancing as well as many other celebrities doing the popular dance.
Keep an eye on the charts in the near future. With all of the controversy surrounding TikTok, it will be interesting to see if any other musicians utilize the platform to catapult their songs up the chart.
