FEATURED POST FROM THE BEST BLOGGERS IN MUSIC: Ariana Grande Positions Herself on Top of the Charts
Ariana Grande Set to Lead Charts with ‘Positions’
Ariana Grande is no stranger to charting well. In fact, she has just tied the fourth-most weeks at the top of the Artist 100 chart for a 14th total week. However, this isn’t consecutive. This appearance can be attributed to the release of her new album “Positions”, putting her on top for the first time since April 2019. Additionally, the album itself has launched at the peak of the all genre Billboard 200 chart. With 174,000 equivalent album units reported by Nielsen Music, this shows to be enough to give her the push for its first week. Most noteworthy, all of the songs from the album have found themselves in the Hot 100. Two songs find their way to the top 10. “34+35” shows up at number 8 and the title-track of the album reaches number 2.
It should be noted that the album “Positions” is the third number one from Ariana Grande in less than three years. This is the fastest a solo female artist has accumulated number ones on record. Especially relevant, this is Ariana’s fifth number 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart. Of the 174,000 units earned, streaming equivalent album units summed up to 129,000. This equals almost 174 million on-demand streams of the album songs. Additionally, 42,000 in album sales, and 3,000 in track equivalent album units earned.
Especially relevant, with the almost 174 million streams, this is the second largest streaming week for a non-rap/R&B or Latin album this year. Most noteworthy, only Taylor Swift had a larger streaming week with “Folklore” in its debut week. Ariana Grande did not give her fans much notice that the album was dropping except when she teased it in mid-October. Keep an eye on the charts moving forward to see how Ariana continues to chart. This is the most popular time of the year for the biggest artists to release music.
