Lewis Capaldi Lands Second Number 1 on Adult Pop Songs Airplay
Scottish musician Lewis Capaldi has scored his second number 1 on the Adult Pop Songs Airplay chart with “Before You Go”. The artist first led the chart with his breakthrough single “Someone You Loved” which led for seven weeks last year. Furthermore, the ballad amassed well over 500 million views on SoundCloud. Most noteworthy, Lewis is the first solo male to lead the Adult Pop Songs chart in his first two entries. However, two other males have previously led the chart – just not as solo artists. John Legend with “All of Me” in 2014 and as a featured guest on Meghan Trainor’s “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” in 2016. Especially relevant, Rob Thomas did it in 1999 as a guest on Santana’s “Smooth” and as a solo artist with “Lonely No More” in 2005. Additionally, the Scottish artist joins the likes of Maren Morris, Lorde, fun., and Daughtry as acts to lead with two singles as lead roles.

“Before You Go” is released via Vertigo/Capitol Records and completes a full jump to number 1 after 34 weeks. It should be noted that the Adult Pop Songs chart calculates weekly plays by total and tracked by Nielsen Music. This data is pulled from 80 adult top 40 stations and evaluated from there. Additionally, the song initially debuted on the Hot 100 at number 85 back in February. It is a melancholy based ballad that shares the experience of a loved one dying by suicide. Additionally, the singer/songwriter questions in the lyrics asking “Was there something I could’ve said to make your heart beat better? Was there something I could’ve said to make it all stop hurting?”. With such an emphasis on mental health these days, this is an important song for the times that many people can relate to.
Keep an eye on the charts to see how Lewis Capaldi continues to rank among his peers. It seems this young man is here to stay.
